We are proud to have supported the installation of the first ever nearshore artificial nesting structures in the UK for the offshore wind industry. Installed along the East Coast of England in the North Sea, these three nesting structures were erected to support a vulnerable seabird species, the black-legged kittiwake, as part of an ecological compensation scheme for the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.
The first of their kind in the UK, the structures play an important role in supporting and researching vulnerable species, whilst simultaneously supporting the generation of clean, wind-powered electricity through the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm. The wind farm, when completed, will be the largest of its kind in the world.
Piling gates are a critical component of marine construction, ensuring the accurate placement of piles and jackets to create secure, long-lasting foundations. At MintMech, we specialise in designing bespoke piling gates that cater to the unique requirements of every project. Whether it’s adjusting to operational limitations, accommodating changing vessel logistics or ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure, we provide black and white solutions that deliver results.
While the fundamental principles of piling gate design remain the same, no two projects are alike. Each job comes with its own set of challenges. Client-specific requirements demand tailored designs, ensuring the final product meets the exact needs of the project. Environmental and operational constraints, such as seabed conditions and port access restrictions, also play a significant role in determining key design choices.
The interface between the piling gate and the installation method must also be carefully considered. For example, clients may charter a jack-up barge for the early phase of installation before switching to another jack-up for a subsequent stage of the project, requiring designs to be compatible with multiple vessels.
One of our recent projects involved designing a piling gate for an artificial bird nesting structure near an offshore windfarm.
The piling gate played a vital role in the installation. It first held the pile vertically as it was driven into the seabed, ensuring accurate placement. Once the top side structure was positioned over the pile, the gate provided a stable and safe working area for grouting operations.
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the jacket remained perfectly still while the grouting cured, maintaining a uniform annular gap between the pile and jacket. To address this, MintMech designed a temporary hanging frame and custom grout seal that supported the jacket’s weight during curing, assisted in lowering it into position and enabled seamless installation with minimal disruption.
Frequently, contractors secure a project before engaging with engineering specialists. This results in compressed timelines for design and fabrication. To mitigate delays, we provide early-stage phased documentation to accelerate material procurement and deliver preliminary structural details (such as steel specifications) so that manufacturing can begin promptly.
Installation methods have a direct impact on design, particularly when vessels must navigate port restrictions. In this case, the piling gate was a modular design, allowing key elements to be installed after the vessel had cleared the port. Additionally, the upending bucket was engineered to accommodate multiple pile diameters, making the best use of deck space and ensuring efficiency during installation.
A piling gate alone isn’t enough — successful installation depends on temporary works and supporting systems. MintMech can provide essential components such as sea fastenings for secure transportation, rollover frames and upending buckets to aid pile positioning and custom lifting frames to enhance installation efficiency and custom grout seals for differing fixity arrangements. These elements ensure a smooth and safe installation process.
