Artificial Nesting Structures

We were proud to support the installation of the first ever nearshore artificial nesting structures in the UK for the offshore wind industry. Installed along the East Coast of England in the North Sea, these three nesting structures were erected to support vulnerable seabird species, the black-legged kittiwake, as part of an ecological compensation scheme for the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.

The first of their kind in the UK, the structures play an important role in supporting and researching vulnerable seabird species, whilst simultaneously supporting the generation of clean, wind-powered electricity through the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm. The wind farm, when completed, will be the largest of its kind in the world.

Supporting Red7Marine, we designed the bespoke piling gate used on the 65 tonne 8m x 6m high artificial avian nesting structures, including:

  • Pile gate vessel interface design
  • Pile & transition piece rollover frame design & supply
  • Sea fastening design & supply
  • Transfer ladder design & vessel interface design
  • Grout seal design
