Access systems

Getting people safely to work, up, across and between structures that are often in motion.

Engineer working at height on an access platform

Safe access is its own engineering discipline, and a recurring part of what we do. We design the ladders, baskets, walkways and platforms that let people reach equipment, structures and vessels safely, from a single companionway ladder to a full multi-level access system and including the hard cases where the thing you’re stepping onto is moving relative to the thing you’re stepping off. Everything is engineered to the relevant access, structural and lifting regulations and configured to the site.

What we design

  • Man baskets & personnel-transfer baskets – personnel carriers for lifting people to and from a structure or vessel, including leg-access baskets that land crew onto a jack-up or platform leg. In mining these are the cages and conveyances on our shaft conveyances – same engineering, different setting.
  • Multi-level access systems – integrated walkways, stair towers, ladders, companionway ladders and rest platforms that take people through several levels safely, with the grating, edge protection and fall-arrest provision designed in.
  • Heave-compensated platform access – access systems that stay safe when the platform or vessel is moving in a seaway, including a heave-compensated access arrangement with custom fall-arrest devices whose travel exceeds the heave motion
  • Complex & relative-motion access – gangways and transfer arrangements engineered for the relative movement between two structures, where simple fixed access would be unsafe.
  • Clamp-on, no-weld access – ladders and access that clamp onto a derrick or structure without hot work – avoiding the cost, downtime and permitting of welding and ideal for retrofit onto existing assets.
  • Access retrofit – adding compliant access to equipment and structures that were never designed for it, bringing older assets up to current safety expectations.
  • Grating to suit – built to work with a variety of grating types and finishes as the duty, environment and slip-resistance requirements demand.

We design it, verify it to the relevant regulations and manage manufacture through our supplier network, one team accountable for an access system that is safe, compliant and built for the real conditions on site.
