Automated geotechnical marine drill

A complete topside drilling system for offshore-wind and marine site investigation, heave-compensated, automation- and piggyback-ready.

Looking up a geotechnical drilling mast against a bright sky

This is a full topside (deck-mounted) geotechnical drilling system: a twin-mast “goalpost” derrick with a 50-tonne hydraulic top drive, heave compensation, semi-automatic pipe and tool handling and an integrated mud system, designed to be mobilised onto a d dynamically positioned vessel through a moonpool. It’s engineered to recover high-quality cores and in-situ data in demanding offshore conditions, and built from the start to be automated in stages and to accept a piggyback drill, so a single rig grows in capability over its life.

System

  • Derrick & top drive – twin-mast goalpost derrick with full access; 50t hydraulic top drive (power swivel), on a travelling rooster box.
  • Heave compensation – a twin-hoist ram-rig passive system (air-over-oil, hard-piped, no load-bearing flexible hoses) with active-heave assist for displacement control of the bit in soft ground.
  • Handling & automation – an iron roughneck, a remote tool handler, a catwalk with tail-line winch and a radio-remote pipe-handling crane; full positional interlocking, staged toward an unmanned rig floor.
  • Fluids & power – integrated mud mixing and pumping; containerised hydraulic power; PLC control with 100% failover redundancy, safety PLC, CCTV and optional offsite monitoring.
