Sheaves – designed, instrumented and supplied to suit the duty

From a single replacement sheave to a complete instrumented sheave package with its housing, mount and structural calculations, engineered to the wire, the load and the operation.

Stack of large black steel sheaves with machined bores

We design and supply sheaves for offshore, marine and mining handling systems, wire rope, umbilical and hose, plain or instrumented, as a single sheave or as a complete engineered package. Because we design the whole load path rather than pulling a part off a shelf, the sheave, its bearing, its pin and its housing are sized together to the wire, the line tension, the wrap and the environment and certified to the standard your operation needs.

What we supply

  • Sheaves to any configuration – plate, machined or forged-groove sheaves in steel, hardened-groove steel for long wire life or engineering plastics where weight, corrosion or wire wear drive the choice.
  • Banana sheaves for umbilicals – large-radius sheaves that protect the minimum bend radius of an umbilical or cable while still sensing line tension.
  • Banana sheaves – large-radius sheaves that protect the minimum bend radius of an umbilical or cable while still sensing line tension.
  • Light and fast sheaves – low-inertia designs for high line speeds or weight-critical spreads.
  • Plain or roller bearings – full-complement roller bearings for high load and duty, or plain bush/bearing arrangements where simplicity, shock tolerance or maintenance access matters; bearings, sealing and corrosion protection specified to the environment.
  • Turning sheaves and wire reeving – single sheaves through to a complete reeving network that routes the wire across a deck or structure, with the fleet angles, lead angles and loads engineered end to end.
  • Wire guides and flag sheaves – guides to control entry to the sheave, and flag sheaves mounted on a dynamic pin that rotate to accommodate a larger fleet angle than a fixed sheave allows, keeping the rope seated and the spooling clean.
  • Sheave housings, mounts and complete packages – the sheave with its housing or mount, secondary retention, seafastenings or machinery interface and the structural calculations to prove it – supplied as one accountable item, not a loose part for someone else to integrate.

Instrumented sheaves – measurement built into the load path

Where you need to know the line load, not just carry it, we build measurement into the sheave. A load-sensing sheave pin reads the force at the sheave and turns it into a usable signal:

  • Line tension and wire payout – continuous readout of tension and rope movement for the operator and the control system.
  • Tension resolved from wrap angle – the pin senses the resolved load across the wrap, so a known wrap angle gives a calibrated line tension; on a flag (rotating) sheave the same approach holds the measurement valid as the wrap and lead angle change.
  • Wire tension independent of wrap angle – sheave arrangements that report true line tension even where the wrap angle varies through the operation, removing the geometry error that catches out a fixed single-pin reading.
  • Connection to overload protection – the sheave signal feeds monitoring, display and the safety chain and integrates directly with our overload protection systems so the same sheave that carries the load also protects it.

Instrumentation can be specified to fine resolution at the wire, and the pin is engineered so that, in an emergency overload, the structure survives even if the sensor is treated as sacrificial.

How we deliver it

  • Designed to the standard that applies – wire-rope, lifting-appliance and structural codes as the application demands (steel wire rope, offshore lifting appliances, mine headframe and shaft structures and marine-lifting codes), with material certification, load ratings and a statement of compliance.
  • Whole-package accountability – sheave, bearing, pin, housing, retention and interface engineered and certified together, with the structural calculations to back the rating.
  • Supply or design service – a finished sheave or sheave package supplied to your spec, or the design and analysis (sizing, FEA, hand calculation, drawings, compliance file) where you fabricate or integrate yourself.
  • Short lead-time supply – for replacement and like-for-like sheaves we hold a fast route from drawing or sample to supplied part, to get a spread back into service quickly.
