Case study
Temporary Works Grillage
An international turnkey package supporting pile installation for a new road bridge across the Kiel Canal.

As part of our international turnkey packages, we were involved in the onsite installation of a temporary works grillage in Rendsburg, Germany, to support pile installation works. Working with Combifloat Systems B.V. and Red7Marine, this collaboration involved the design and commission of temporary works to support construction of a new road bridge across the Kiel Canal – the 1,500 m long by 42 m high bridge carrying the A7 motorway east of Rendsburg in Schleswig-Holstein.
Our engineers developed the structural design of a grillage platform to maximise the capacity of a C7 cantilevered pontoon, supporting the operation of a 100 t tracked crane and a 30 t VRM2000 casing oscillator and enabling the successful drilling and installation of piling work.
We provided
- Vessel structure and system analysis
- C7 bull-rail design
- Removable cantilever fabrication design
- Additional structure to withstand loads generated by the VRM2000 (<230 t)
- Structure to accommodate torque reaction of the VRM2000 on deck
- Structure to allow ±250 mm positioning tolerance
- Structure to ensure HS8100 track levels and maximum track-pressure requirements are met
- Safe-access design
