Operating heavy hydraulic equipment from a fixed pedestal forces a compromise: the controls are in one place, but the best view is somewhere else. A wireless walkaround system removes that compromise. The operator carries a belly-box transmitter and moves to wherever they can see the work most clearly, while staying clear of moving loads, high-pressure lines and pinch points. It’s a safety improvement and a productivity one, better sightlines mean better control.

What problem it solves

Fixed control stations put operators close to hazards and far from the best vantage point, and they tie one person to one position. Walkaround control lets the operator stand where the job is best seen and reached, improving both safety and the quality of the operation and removing the need for a permanent control pedestal and its cabling.

Typical configuration & boundaries

  • Wireless belly-box transmitter – carried by the operator, with proportional control of the functions that need fine control (rams, winches, travel) and on/off control of auxiliaries.
  • Robust, maintainable receiver – industrial wireless link engineered for the offshore environment, with the safety behaviour designed in: defined states for loss of signal, low battery and fault.
  • Failsafe by design – the system holds the load safely and reverts to a known state on any loss of control, with E-stop authority maintained throughout.
  • Integrated with the hydraulics – proportional valves and sensing specified together so the control feels precise and behaves predictably under load.

We build these into new equipment and supply them as part of our handling, LARS and HPU systems and we retrofit them to equipment that wasn’t built for remote operation (see remote control retrofit).
